This is a VW Corrado Speedster custom modified by Ricky Couch. Ricky created this incredible custom specifically for the auction held in support of the Second Knoxville show in the mid-Nineties (1995 or 1996?). He turned all of the metal pieces himself, as well as creating the one-off graphics.

Having met Ricky and viewed his work at other shows, I knew I had to have this model. I brought money to the show specifically looking to buy another of John Mahaffy's incredible weathered masterpieces. But, as I recall, he either wasn't there or didn't have anything to sell. That left me with some additional hobby money and I set my sights on the Corrado in the auction.

The bidding was relatively spirited but
everybody figured out I wasn't going home without this model when it went over $100. I ended up paying $125 as I remember (please don't tell my Wife!) for the VW and was extremely happy about the winning bid.

I'm pretty sure Ricky had his Moo Milk truck at the Knoxville (if not that one, it was another great creation). After winning the Corrado in the auction, I wanted Ricky to autograph the model for me. I saw him standing with a group of fellow modelers across the room (Ricky was always surrounded by modeling friends. If he met you, you were his
friend. That's just the way he was). I approached the group holding the Corrado model behind my back. I got his attention and asked if he would autograph his model for me. You should have seen the look of abject HORROR on his face! It seems he thought I was carrying the Milk Truck behind my back! There was a huge flush of relief on his face when he saw the VW come from behind my back with a Sharpie in my other hand.

The Corrado has been a treasured part of my model collection since that show. It is even now more dear to me after Ricky's untimely passing. We are all diminished by the loss of a great modeling talent and a true Southern Gentleman.
